Mindstage

The Mindstage project was conducted 2004 in the Digital Studios of the Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge. Our main research interest focused the use and design of real-time 3D virtual environments as educational virtual worlds. Our prototype explored the relationships between a given linear lecture and the virtual world in which we staged the lecture's performance.

The prototype reversed the idea of the "memory palace" and used an illustrated lecture on film design by Christopher Hobbs as its narrative spine. A customized 3D environment was created based on this material. The main design issues were mapping the linear talk onto the virtual space and the implementation of various interactive features within it. We argue that a careful use of spatial design supports a degree of non-linear story-telling without compromising the core linear content.

The PI and producer was Paul Richens, main designer and director was Michael Nitsche, coder was Jonathan Mackenzie. The project was funded from a generous grant from Informatix Inc of Tokyo.
