During the execution phase, our intervention had two main parts. At 9am on Thursday we walked to the bridge that connects Skiles to the big staircase. We started wrapping the tape to close off the walkway on the side closest to the classrooms. When we finished, a GT official came up and said that what we were doing “wasn’t a good idea” because it conflicted with “campus planning” and he told us we had to take it down. I asked him if he would at least take a picture with him in front of the caution tape, but he said no. He then proceeded to climb through the tape and go about his way. We took the tape down and decided to relocate.
It was still earlier than 9:30, so the class change hadn’t happened. We moved to the long staircase next to the College of Computing and we cautioned off the top and the bottom of the staircase and the side entrance to the staircase as well. There were many mixed reactions as people approached by themselves or in small groups.
While setting up for the second attempt, we were approached by a confused student. He said, “You know people are just going to turn around, right?” Jessica replied, “I hope so.” As he walked away in disgust he said, “Well it’s really annoying.”
We had to reset the tape one time because one lone boy literally just karate chopped the tape out of his way. After re-tying it, Katie rode the Klaus elevator up to binary bridge, and she talked with one of her friends who chose to take the elevator. When she asked Josh why he was taking the elevator, he said that it was because the CoC stairs were blocked. He went on to say that normally he would have just walked through the caution tape, but because he had a little extra time that morning and was going to be early for class, he would take the elevator even though it was slightly out of the way.
We stayed on opposite ends of the binary bridge to get different viewpoints on our Intervention. At one point another of Katie’s friends was walking towards the Klaus elevator and he stopped to talk. Patrick asked why the stairs were blocked and when she told him that they did it he asked if it was a ‘social experiment’. Katie asked Patrick why he didn’t just take the stairs and he said it was because ‘He respects authority’
